Single summer is upon us.
Plus: Dua Lipa’s Google maps collab, a bookless bookstore, and the art of sonic branding.
The NBA playoffs have us all burning with New York fever, the internet is yearning for vulnerability, dating apps are taking us to the streets, and more people than ever are single and loving it. This can only mean one thing: summer is ramping up to be pretty hot.
While you’re out solo-maxxing at one of Dua Lipa’s recommended natural wine bars, take a cue from Nike’s World Cup tagline “RIP the Script”: Ditch the plan, see what happens, and let it get a little messy.

Gaming is America’s new favourite pastime
Gaming has left the basement. No longer a niche activity associated with a particular demographic, gaming is now an identifier for the masses. But it’s not just youth driving this trend – even Boomers are playing weekly. A beloved form of entertainment for kids of all ages, gaming offers a few qualities the people can’t resist: more entertainment for your buck, the ability to connect with friends, and interesting digital third spaces. The line between playing a game and being online is dissolving, and with the gamification of other sectors (i.e. prediction markets), this is officially where the people are getting their kicks and making connections.
The importance of being earnest
Have you watched Project Hail Mary, Rivals or Off Campus? If so, you may be experiencing symptoms of earnestness, with a side of yearning. After years of performative culture defined by irony and cynicism, we’re swinging the pendulum towards something a little more earnest. Earnestness and yearning have emerged as a cultural mood, and it’s marked by honesty, vulnerability, and showing you care. As we become more nostalgic for pre-internet connection, anything from UGC to Substack posts that have an emotional hook is going to heat things up more than a cleverly written “cool” post.
